Bush Sums Up Own Presidency

By mcoppock | December 18, 2008

Via Boing Boing, of all places, here’s Bush making perhaps the most nakedly precise statement I’ve seen from a politician in ages:

“I’ve abandoned free-market principles to save the free-market system.” — George Bush, at 1:40 in this CNN video. (via Slate)

And for me, no matter the context in which he said it (I don’t have the patience to watch the video, but I’m sure there’s no context that can save it), this sums up the Bush Presidency. It also sums up the Republican Party, is it exists today, although they’d be loathe to admit it.

And, note to Boing Boing: This is not a self-contradictory quote. It’s the kind of thing that Bush–and you–believe, down deepest in your ugly little souls.
