Automaker Bailout: Congress Chooses a Little Fascism to Go With Their Socialism

Yet another example of economic fascism (government control over nominally privately-owned businesses):

Pelosi said the [government’s plan to bailout the auto industry] would call for “immediate, targeted assistance” and must include several principles, including the restructuring of the companies “to ensure their long-term economic viability,” new fuel-efficiency standards, and the development of advanced vehicles.

It’s been wrong to call our current Leftist crop socialists; in fact, they’re a little bit of both considering their partial purchase of financial institutions. Call ’em fasciosocialists. Or sociofascists.

And labor’s more than happy to play along with the charade that it’s merely the current financial crisis that’s brought the likes of GM to their knees:

Pelosi did not mention any plans for the UAW to make any concessions as part of the legislation. UAW president Ron Gettelfinger told reporters earlier Saturday the problem is not the union’s contract with the auto companies.

“The focus has to be on the economy as a whole as opposed to a UAW contract,” Gettelfinger said. The union has said it made several concessions in its 2007 labor agreement, setting lower pay for new hires and placing retiree health care liability into a trust run by the UAW.

Uh huh. Because the UAW says it, it must be true.

And Bush has no room to complain, since he started the whole ball rolling:

The move sets up a conflict with the White House, which has opposed using the bailout funds to help General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler LLC. The Detroit companies have been battered by an economic meltdown that has choked their sales and frozen credit.
